Today's hair stylist is much more than a hair trimmer. The successful stylist today will demonstrate masterful skills that keep step with a continually changing and diverse clientele. With seasonal trends changing and shifting so often, a vast basis of training is needed to contour with the current fashions at hand. Thirty-five years of experience have more than prepared J.C. to deal with these variables in the hair styling world. The tools of the trade did not come easy. From the back hills of Arkansas to western Kansas where he started cutting hair and finally to Kansas City where he currently operates his salon, J.C. has risen to stand at the pinnacle of the profession. His dreams and inspirations have evolved from a lifelong pursuit of excellence in style, diversity and spirit. His first inspirations came at a young age.

"I was nine years old and living in a town in northern Arkansas. My family was very poor growing up and my father always cut our hair. With love I admit, my father was never very inclined towards hair styling. There were many days I could hardly bare to go to school wearing the butcher's handwork. One particular instance left me completely bald and pushed me to the breaking point. I was heart broken and literally cried myself to sleep that evening. As I laid in bed whimpering, I vowed to myself that I would learn to cut hair so all of my friends would never have to go through what I was going through on that occasion. It was a solemn promise made at a young age but those same feelings bare witness daily on my clients.

"Surviving a childhood marred with foul hairstyles, I moved into high school. Unfortunately, I lost both of my parents to heart attacks by the age of 16 and I was forced to move from my hometown of Harrison, Arkansas. I moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas to live with my oldest sister and completed high school there. Immediately after graduation, I enrolled in barber school in Wichita, Kansas. This was before the idea of hairstyling schools came to fruition. I completed the courses with flying colors and accepted my first job in Colby, Kansas. While marooned in western Kansas, I earned my keep by trimming the hair of hard working farmers and loose-mouthed mechanics. Luckily, I managed to meet my wife Kaylene as well. We were married on August 7, 1965. It didn't take long for me to grow tired of working on dust-filled heads for a mere $1.25 a head. I had more ambition than Colby, Kansas could tolerate. I began to pursue the refinement of my skills as a hairstylist. I sent off for books from many cities, including Chicago and Orlando. I also visited a Joe Carlo hair show in Denver, Colorado, where I purchased my first hair dryer and razor. Soon after, my wife and I shoved off for Kansas City to make a new life.

"In November of 1968, the next chapter in my life began. By now the Vietnam War was heating up and I voluntarily joined the army reserves as soon as I moved to Kansas City. I did my training with the Army Rangers in Georgia but was never called up for active duty. This allowed me to continue my hairstyling odyssey as a member of the United States Army Reserves. Living in Kansas City opened up an endless amount of untapped resources for my education. I immediately enrolled and completed the Roffler Men's Styling course and followed up with 18 months of beauty school. It was very challenging to balance a wife, a full-time job, school and the army reserves. A will to succeed and an endless amount of ambition will carry a person a long way.

"On January 5, 1970 I opened my first salon. Word of mouth spread quickly and within three years I had 3 salons with up to 20 people working under my name. While establishing my business, I furthered my hairstyling skills with some instructions from the nationally renowned Dan Sircone and quickly assumed the position of state trainer for Roffler Styling. By the age of 25, I was already reaching my dream of helping people be as beautiful and happy as they could while creating a very successful business.

"I have been able to continue the success of my business by clinging to a simple philosophy: make people look better than ever before, and they will come back. I knew that if I made people happy, they would come back. However, making people happy is a science that can never be mastered. I learned very quickly that a stylist cannot simply put a magazine haircut on an everyday person. There are many variables that fall into the equation when analyzing a person and the right hairstyle for them. As a stylist I have to look at a person's whole body. I look at their proportions, weight, head size, bone structure, and color to begin with. Then I look at the type of hair that they have: whether it's coarse, soft, wavy, straight, fine or thick. After determining the body type and hair characteristics that apply, I ask a series of questions pertaining to how a client feels about their hair. What do you like about your hair? What do you dislike about your hair? What would you like your hair to do? Do you want to spend a lot of time styling your hair every day or do you want a low-maintenance style? After compiling all this information during a short consultation, I am able to visualize exactly what I need to do. I can see exactly what needs to be done to create a dynamite hairstyle that fulfills my clientele's desires but also fits their biological makeup. This process of consultation and visualization has been the key to my personal success as a master stylist and has contributed greatly to the success of my business as a whole.

"Currently, I have integrated my various salons into one larger location. My clientele consists of men, women and children of all ages. For 13 years I styled the U.S. 9th Marine Corp. with a variety of different clipper cuts which have raised my clipper skills to impeccable heights. I have been very fortunate to have experiences like these, which have helped me develop my diverse styling abilities, which range from chemical enhancing to all unique shear techniques and clipper styling. This foundation is very valuable for those challenging clients that bring nothing to the chair but bad haircut histories, no direction and a hand full of tissues. I originally sought this vocation to help people and it's times like these that make my job most gratifying. After 35 years, I still get out of bed with a smile on my face and thank God everyday for the joy that I have. I have been given the opportunity to bring out the best in people and make them feel 100% better about themselves every day. My childhood dreams have been fulfilled and now I'm pressing on for new heights of happiness and success.

"I am now marketing my knowledge and experience in a variety of new ways. I am developing a series of training videos for young hairstylists and working to develop my own line of hair products. I have achieved my dream of helping people look good. Now I am going to teach young hair stylists how to fulfill their dreams of cutting hair with the highest degree of accuracy and precision, thereby expanding on my quest to make people beautiful and happy with themselves and their appearance.

"I appreciate your interest in my history and thank you for your time and consideration.

"Take care and God bless."
